01 Guidebook Rules

Testing Center Compliance

The **ASWB Candidate Guidebook** is the official regulatory document governing the administration of social work licensing exams. Candidates are legally bound by these security and test-taking rules upon registering. Violating security policies can result in score cancellation, board review, and permanent testing bans.

02 Testing Day Steps

Testing Center Check-In Procedure

Follow this compliance process upon arriving at the Pearson Professional Center to prevent security delays:

01
Phase One

Identification Check

Present two valid signature IDs. The proctor will verify that the spelling of your name matches your state board eligibility registration file exactly.

02
Phase Two

Biometric Scan

Staff will capture a digital photograph of you and perform a palm vein scan to create your unique biometric testing identity for lab re-entry.

03
Phase Three

Lab Check-In

Store all personal belongings in a locker, turn out your pockets for inspection, receive your erasable scratch booklet, and be escorted to your computer workstation.

August 2026 Blueprint Update

Important Blueprint Structural Changes

Beginning in **August 2026**, the ASWB is shortening all examination formats. The total question count will be reduced from 170 to **122 questions** (110 scored, 12 pilot items), and the exam time limit will be adjusted to match. Ensure your prep materials are fully aligned with the upcoming **2026 ASWB blueprint revisions**.

04 Safety Controls

Prohibited Personal Belongings

All personal items must be locked in your assigned secure locker prior to testing. The following items are strictly prohibited inside the lab:

Electronic Devices

Cell phones, smartwatches, recording devices, Bluetooth headphones, and fitbits must be powered down completely and locked away. Accessing a device during a break is grounds for score cancellation.

Outerwear & Apparel

Coats, jackets, heavy sweaters, hats, and scarves must be stored in lockers. If you choose to wear a light sweater inside the testing room, you cannot remove it or drape it over your chair.

Calculators & Note Papers

You cannot bring personal calculators or blank paper. The proctor will provide an erasable scratch board, and a virtual, on-screen calculator is built directly into the testing software interface.

05 Guidebook FAQ

Frequently Asked Guidebook Questions

Get clear answers about testing lab rules, signature ID rules, and testing breaks.

Q1 Can I take unscheduled breaks during my 4-hour exam?

Yes. You are allowed to take breaks to use the restroom or access food/water in your locker. However, **the continuous 4-hour exam timer does not stop during your breaks**. Manage break times carefully to preserve question-pacing.

Q2 What happens if my IDs do not match my registration file?

If the name on your IDs does not match your registration file (e.g. spelling errors, missing hyphenation, or nickname usage), you will **not be allowed to test**, and your registration fees will be forfeited. Ensure name alignment well in advance.

Q3 Are there any exceptions to the 2026 blueprint transition?

No. Once the ASWB transitions to the shortened 122-question exam format in August 2026, **all candidates registering after the transition date** will take the new exam format. All of our prep packages are fully updated to support the 2026 guidelines.
